The decision considers confirmed out-of-office blood pressure, overall cardiovascular risk, age, kidney disease, diabetes, target-organ effects and how pressure responds to lifestyle changes.
Persistent stage 2 hypertension generally warrants medicine in addition to lifestyle measures. Lower readings may also justify treatment when absolute cardiovascular risk or another condition is high.
